Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
